What Size Real Christmas Tree Should I Buy?

Choosing the right Christmas tree size is mostly about three things: your ceiling height, your available floor space and how much room you want for your tree stand and topper.

Hillview Christmas Trees grows fresh Radiata Pine Christmas trees on our family farm near Tamworth, NSW, with collection and delivery options across NSW and Brisbane.

Because every real Christmas tree grows naturally, heights and widths are approximate and every tree will have its own shape and character.

Hillview Christmas Tree Sizes

🌲 Small — approximately 1.5–1.8m
A great choice for smaller rooms, apartments, lower ceilings or customers who prefer a more compact tree.

🌲 Medium — approximately 1.8–2.1m
Our most versatile size and generally a great choice for a standard Australian home.

🌲 Large — approximately 2.1–2.4m
Best suited to larger rooms or homes with extra ceiling height.

🌲 Extra Large — approximately 2.4–2.8m
A statement tree for high ceilings and large spaces. Extra Large trees are available at selected locations and in limited numbers.

Start With Your Ceiling Height

Before ordering your tree, measure from the floor to the ceiling in the exact spot where your Christmas tree will stand.

As a general guide, allow around 30cm of clearance for your Christmas tree stand, topper and a little breathing room above the tree.

Simple guide:
Ceiling height minus approximately 30cm = your maximum comfortable tree height.

For example, if you have a standard 2.4m ceiling, a Medium tree of approximately 1.8–2.1m is usually a very comfortable choice.

A Large tree may suit a 2.4m ceiling if it is towards the lower end of the size range and your stand and topper are compact, but if you want plenty of clearance, Medium is the safer choice.

Quick Tree Size Guide by Ceiling Height

Ceiling Height Recommended Tree Size Our Suggestion
Around 2.1m Small 1.5–1.8m
Around 2.4m Small or Medium 1.5–2.1m
Around 2.7m Medium or Large 1.8–2.4m
3.0m+ Large or Extra Large 2.1–2.8m

These are general guidelines only. Your preferred tree topper, stand height and the exact shape of your tree can all affect the final height.

Don't Forget the Width of a Real Christmas Tree

Height is only part of choosing the right tree.

Real Christmas trees naturally vary in width. Some are fuller and broader, while others grow with a slightly narrower shape.

Before ordering, look at the area where your tree will stand and consider:

  • How far the tree can extend into the room.
  • Whether it will block a doorway or walkway.
  • Whether furniture needs to be moved.
  • Whether the tree will be placed in a corner, against a wall or in the middle of the room.

If your floor space is limited, choosing a slightly smaller tree is usually easier than trying to squeeze a large tree into a tight area.

Small Christmas Trees — 1.5–1.8m

A Small Hillview Christmas Tree is a great option if you have:

  • A smaller living room.
  • An apartment or unit.
  • A lower ceiling.
  • Limited floor space.
  • A smaller number of decorations.
  • A preference for a neat, compact real Christmas tree.

Small trees still give you the fragrance, natural shape and traditional feel of a real Christmas tree without taking over the room.

Medium Christmas Trees — 1.8–2.1m

Medium is the size we would generally recommend for a typical Australian family home.

It gives you plenty of room for decorations while still fitting comfortably beneath many standard 2.4m ceilings.

If you're not sure whether to choose Small or Large, Medium is often the safest choice.

Large Christmas Trees — 2.1–2.4m

A Large tree is ideal when you want your Christmas tree to become a real feature of the room.

They're best suited to:

  • Larger living areas.
  • Open-plan homes.
  • Higher ceilings.
  • Country homes and larger family spaces.
  • Customers with lots of decorations and lights.

Always measure carefully before ordering a Large tree, particularly if your ceiling is around 2.4m.

Extra Large Christmas Trees — 2.4–2.8m

Extra Large trees are our biggest Christmas trees and are available in limited numbers at selected locations.

They are best suited to homes with:

  • High ceilings.
  • Large open living areas.
  • Entry foyers or larger entertaining spaces.
  • Plenty of room around the tree.

Because Extra Large trees vary naturally, we strongly recommend measuring your space carefully before ordering.

Still Not Sure Which Size to Choose?

When in doubt, we generally recommend choosing the slightly smaller size.

A tree that has comfortable clearance around it will usually look better than a tree that is pressed against the ceiling or crowded by furniture.

Remember Your Christmas Tree Stand

Your stand also contributes to the finished height of your Christmas tree.

We stock reusable Cinco Classic Christmas Tree Stands specifically designed for real Christmas trees.

The Cinco Classic has a generous 6.62L water reservoir and is suitable for trees up to approximately 3.05m tall.

Getting Your Tree Through the Door

Your Hillview Christmas Tree will be wrapped in protective netting for collection or delivery, which compresses the branches and makes the tree much easier to transport and carry into your home.

Once inside, remove the netting and allow the branches some time to relax back into their natural position.

If you have a particularly narrow doorway, hallway or staircase, it is worth considering this when choosing your tree size.

Real Christmas Trees Are Naturally Different

The measurements on our website are height ranges rather than exact measurements.

A real Christmas tree isn't manufactured to identical dimensions. Some trees are slightly fuller, some narrower, some have more space between branches and some are naturally very dense.

That's part of what makes a real Christmas tree special.

We cannot guarantee a particular tree shape, width or appearance within a size category, but every tree is grown and shaped specifically for Christmas.

Once You've Chosen Your Size

The next step is simply to choose the Christmas tree location and date that suits you.

Hillview Christmas Trees supplies fresh real Christmas trees across NSW and Brisbane, including collection and selected home-delivery options.

Keep Your Real Christmas Tree Fresh

Once your tree is home, water is the most important part of keeping it looking fresh.

Make a fresh cut from the base of the trunk if required, place the tree into water promptly and keep the stand reservoir topped up every day.
